A few years ago, scientists from NASA announced that the 9th planet Pluto lost its status as a planet. Later, Pluto was declared a dwarf planet. On the 23rd of June 2016, following a referendum, the United Kingdom declared it no longer wanted to be a member of the European Union.

These shifting borders and geographies that currently determine not only the status of countries and celestial beings but also their imagined living conditions, inspired Işıl Eğrikavuk to produce the performative dinner Pluto’s Kitchen, in collaboration with chef Vidar Begum.

Cultural identity is inextricably linked with the politics of food and the sharing of regional cuisines across borders. For this performative piece, Eğrikavuk will be examining the alternative, by envisioning what the kitchen of an isolated planet, and thus an isolated nation, would look like.
